Biography of the State Secretary
Sandro Gozi was appointed as State Secretary to European Affairs by Decree of the President of the Republic of 28 February 2014. Across his political career, he exercised several public duties.
In 2013, he was elected President of the Italian Parliamentary Delegation to the Assembly of the Council of Europe and Vice-President of the Parliamentary Assembly itself.
In January 2014, he was elected Vice-President of the Socialist Group. Engaged in the European Federalist Movement, he has co-chaired the Federalist Parliamentary Intergroup for the United States of Europe.
Between 2013 and May 2016, he also served as Advisor to the Municipality of Rome on matters related to the European funds and projects.
Member of the Italian Parliament since 2006, he chaired from 2006 to 2008 the Parliamentary "Committee of Control for the Enforcement of the Schengen Agreement, for Oversight of Europol Activities and the Control and Oversight of Immigration Affairs".
Between 2008 and 2013, he was Group leader of the Democratic Party at the Parliamentary Commission on EU policies and in charge of European Policies for the Democratic Party.
From 1995 to 1996 he served as a Diplomat at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1996, he was in charge of the Relations with the European Parliament at the European Commission, and participated in the negotiation process for the adoption of the Euro.
He also worked as an official of the European Commission for 10 years, dealing with several matters, namely Institutional Affairs, regional cooperation in the Balkans and the Mediterranean, education and culture. Furthermore, he was a member of the cabinet of the European Commission's President Romano Prodi from 2000 to 2004, and later a Political Advisor to President José Manuel Barroso.
When he came back to Italy in 2005, Sandro Gozi worked as a Diplomatic Advisor to the Governor of the Apulia Region, and as Advisor on European Policies to the Prodi Government (2006 – 2008).
From 2004 to 2012, he was Deputy Secretary-general of the European Democratic Party.
He is the President of the Italy-India Association and professor of European Institutions and Policies at the Paris Institut d'Ėtudes Politiques and at the European Colleges of Bruges and Parma.
Sandro Gozi is also the author of number of publications on European politics, editorials and articles on national and European policies.
